Mangroves & Melaleucas
I am drawn to these trees everywhere I go. To be amongst the mangroves - cool, shaded, green and quiet, is to be in a secret world that envelops and protects you.
Often found together at the edge of rivers, creeks, and lakes in NSW, mangroves and melaleucas both play a vital role in protecting our environment through carbon sequestering, stabilising soil, filtering water, and providing habitat. Mangroves are perfectly adapted to high-salinity and oxygen-depleted soils. They can also tolerate high temperatures and extreme tides. According to earthobservatory.nasa.gov, Australia has the third largest area of mangroves in the world, with over 40 species lining almost 20% of our coastline estuaries.
